nuha was enjoying her vanila cupcake with buttercream frosting...I think she enjoyed the icing more.. mama had to finish off her cupppies......takpe mama, nanti kita pegi belly dancing and yoga classes pulak.........hehe......already asked permission from her mum if I could post this photo in here because I felt that it was such a good shot to ignore. My camera was right next to me, after taking photos of a few cakes, etc, so I thot, hey, what a yummy sight!

Happy Mothers Day

The card says it all.... Selamat Hari Ibu.....

from my sweet little Batrisyia. she was holding something behind her back when I picked her up from school this afternoon, and then she said, "Ma, " and handed me the card. How sweet, ain't it? it doesn't have to be grand, it doesn't have to fancy or expensive, but a simple card will do, it touches and melts your heart just the same.

I then called my umi back home, to wish her the same but she was not in, spoke to my abah.Especially for Umi, love you so much, sometimes word itself cannot express the real feelings I feel inside. All those years of raising me, all those years of trying to give the best for me, and still do, you have sacrificed a lot in your life, for us , your kids, you never once ask for anything in return, but, we, us, just say the word, and the next thing we knew, we've got what we wished for.

I remembered umi would boil hot water every morning when I was in primary school ( there was no water heater in the house) so that I would get warm water for my morning bath before going to school, she would then go to the 'nasi berlauk' lady to buy us nasi berlauk with chicken curry for breakfast. She would tie my hair up in ponytails, noticed the 's' for ponytails, yup two ponytails high up the sides of my head, and tied with ribbons and sometimes, 'bulu ayam', red in colour. Sometimes I would bring 'bekal' to school but she didn't have to send me because school was only a walking distance away from our house. Infact, you can actually see the canteen from behind our kitchen!So many things that she did and if I were to write them, it would take more than a day, it goes to show how much love she has for her children. when I was away at a boarding school, every now and then, she would send me food and sambal daging/serunding.

but I was away most of the time, I was away since I was thirteen years old, five years in johor, only coming back during the school holidays, later, i continued my studies and left my Umi behind. I have missed those years but umi is still umi, no matter how far you go, you will come back to the same umi, the loving, the caring, the thoughtful, and ever so wonderful umi..... zue sayang umi, but perhaps I seldom say it often enough.

I may be a mother myself , with three kids, but sometimes I would feel homesick, I would miss my umi, and how wish I could do more for her. Perhaps i could go back home more often.

yey! I know what that means......ikan bakar !

jom jom, hurry up everybody get ready.... and off we went to Kuala Perlis for grilled jenahak, sotong masak asam, udang masak sambal, sup sayur for Batrisyia, sambal belacan and ulam....and it cost us less than RM100!.

"Happy Mothers Day, Ma" was all he said, and that is sweet enough for me, and thank you dear for this lovely mothers Day treat. On the way back, I tried calling Umi again and this time managed to speak with her and wished her "Selamat Hari Ibu".

To all mothers out there, young and old, wherever you are, you know who you are, for you have carrried your children each and everyone of them, inside you for more than nine months or maybe for some, less than nine months, who had experienced the morning sickness and cravings, not forgetting swollen legs and stretch marks, who endured the labour pain by going through the normal birth or had to undergo the C section, even if you do not go through the whole labour process, but still have your children, adopted maybe, and yet you are qualifed to be called mothers, Ma, Mama, Mummy, Umi, Mak, mak mertua, Wan, Mother, or whatever sweet names that your children may call you, here's wishing you:

Selamat Hari Ibu

At first I was wondering, can I pull this one? I have never made any such colourful deco on my cuppies before, piping jelly yes but not fondant. normally it's either pink and white or purple and white or blue and white, just tqo colours, so, when this sweet young lady asked me to use the base blue, cos, the hubby loves blue, in two shades of blue and the 3D fondant toppers must be colourful, I started looking for ideas. She made it easy for me by specifically giving me ideas on what she wanted. She wanted the same design as I did almost a year ago, the black and white birthday surprise cuppies from a wife to her hubby , with the small black and white box containing the white heart and a teddy, but instead of the teddy, she wanted me to replace it with a dinosaur!I have never made dinosaurs before, this would be my first. Immediately I asked Batrisyia to gather all her Dinosaur toys collection , if any, for me to see and to use as referral. Didn't find anything that I'd like to make for her and her hubby and I just remembered a dinosaur cake in one of Debbie Brown's book.Instead of one big dinosaur cake, I just use the design to make a small topper on my cupcake. thank you Debbie Brown for the inspiration.

here's my version of the Dino. One blue for the hubby and I thot, it wouldn't be fun for the blue dino to be all alone on the colourful cuppies so I decided to make the Mrs Dino in pink so that they could cuddle and sit close together , be joyful and happy in their lovely colourful surrounding

The love I felt oozing from this lady is plentiful. From her smses and from her voice , I could feel the warmth and kindness and so full of love, the love for her other half and I thot I wanted to write beautiful love quotes on the cuppies, an expression of her love to her hubby dearest. but I am not a poet, the only poem or pantun I can write is the pantun Ayam Berkokok, so I googled for the love messages, love quotes and found not one but many beautiful sweet love words and here's one of them that I like:

At almost 6 pm, I arrived at the address given, after getting almost lost there....not really lost, I just wasn't sure where I was supposed to go and decided to call her. There was one time, I went there for my daughter's appointment with her doctor and I parked my car somewhere in this big place and I totally and completely had forgotten where I had parked my car! I had to ask the guards to look for my car for I had no clue where it was! After searching for a good half an hour or maybe more, they finally found my car!It's such a big place and they, the buildings all ooked the same to me.....silly me.....:-)

Finally met the lady who ordered this sunshine dino cuppies to surprise her hubby.Such a sweet young lady, as sweet as she sounded over the phone.

Thank you Shakira for allowing me to be part of the sweet occasion. Happy 30th birthday to your sunshine Hubby.

Ayam Masak Portugis..my version.

Ayam masak Portugis
Fancy name, dunno where I got the recipe from, probably in one of the malay magazines or cookbooks that I brought with me when I was studying.I have made Ayam Masak Minangkabau and now it's the Portugis's turn:-)

I first tried this recipe , far, far away from my home, ie my family, I think I had written before about me not being a good cook, blah blah blah....so on and so forth, and I think I still am....am still learning, still looking for recipes in books,internets, on TVs , in other fellow bloggers' blogs, therefore when I made this chicken dish and my good friend who happens to be a good cook and I think she still is, perhaps excellent suits her more, asked me for the recipe, you could just imagine how flattered I was! This Ayam Masak Portugis was one of my few chicken dishes recipe that I had at that time and being asked the "how to's" by someone who can cook with her eyes closed ( exagerrate sikit...hehe )was really, I mean reaaallyy.....an achievement for me.

I'd like to share the recipe here. I like it, dunno about you. Quite easy to make:
Here goes:

Ayam, cleaned and cut into whatever size you like

Heat the oil and fry one onion ( cut into rings), a few red and a few green chili ( sliced), put aside for garnishing later.
then, fry some ( about 5 to 6 ) sliced shallots,
ginger, about one inch
and 1 tbsp of mustard seed ( biji sawi )-tumbuk dulu ye

Add in the blended mixture , about 20 dried chillies and 10 shallots, and fry till pecah minyak
Add in the chicken and mix well with the ingredients.


Add in light coconut milk, lower the heat , cover the wok with lid and leave it until the gravy is almost dry. Then, you add in about 1 tbsp vinegar, salt and sugar to taste. Add in thick gravy and cook till the gravy is very , very, thick!the thicker the better!

Before you serve it, throw back in the fried onion, red and green chillies. Mix well and .......Done! Serve with warm white rice

Sweet 17 Azira! Dah besar panjang anak dara my friend ni, comei pulak tu, siaplah umi dan papa dia nak kepung.Jangan marah kak tuni! This is what we call, beauty with brain, comei and pandai pulak tu.masa mula-mula kenai dulu, kecik lagi, they just moved to the house next door, berkembar dengan our house, I think she was only 2 years old then, I was pregnant with my first daughter when they moved here from KL. We, her mother and me became close friends until today. Selalu jugak bertukar2 lauk and kuih muih, and we still do until now even though we are not neighbours anymore.
I even got the bingkang gandum recipe from her, and a few other recipes too. she wanted this cheesecake just for makan2 with her family since her daughter came back for the weekend and it was Azira's birthday. Wishing Azira ,a Sweet Seventeen Birthday. Success and Happiness Always and menjadi anak yang solehah. Thank you Kak .

it may look bare and plain , but you know what they say, don't judge a book by its cover and thus, do not judge this brownies by its plain look cos looks can be deceiving, it's chocolatey and nutty with walnut and thus there's nothing plain about it, just the look, like a face without makeup , not pretty but not necessarily , not tasty....

Batrisyia's first piping jelly deco

so refreshing! so pure, so innocent and so colourful!( anak siapa ni? of courselah mamanya puji lebih2:-)
I was busy making and decorating my cuppies wth buttercream and piping jelly and she had been pestering me with her request to do the same.I told her to wait until I had finished decorating, takut satgi tak cukup pulak, so she waited patiently.When I had finished the spongebob cuppies and later the birthday vanila cuppies, i said to her,"okay, Mama dah siap, you can start your deco now"

I left her on her own while I was busy taking photos of my cupcakes and this was the result. my monet, my picasso, my batrisyia with her masterpiece,....again....this is just one of her many drawings but this particular one is different, its so vibrant and colourful.This is the first time she drew and colour using the piping jelly and i think this drawing and colour would look nice on a birthday cake.hmmmm, perhaps I would ask her to deco on one of my cakes , maybe for fathers day? ok hold that thought.

kids, you have to encourage their hobby, she likes to draw, i guess most kids her age do the same thing, but before that......

"mama, come and have a look, batrisyia buat flower" was her first remark.

" I'll be with you shortly dear, mummy has to finish these cuppies, my friend is coming over soon." When I finally completed my cuppies and went over to see what she was doing, she had already added another figure next to the flower, on the table/trunk. Using plasticine, she made a figure of herself, complete with her name written on it.

Ana just wanted simple deco for these cuppies, nak makan2 je, but to write names on 10 cuppies with a simple Hepi Besday message.

ten cupcakes with ten names who will be celebrating their birthdays. I thot , maybe they are all May babies, but was I wrong and guess what? everybody shares the same birthdate, May 2nd? cool, ain't it? happy besday to Don, Ghani, Ed, Dyana, Tone, Ina, Gani, Syon, Ani and Zamri!

Marble cheese brownies for a fren and BCT for Qib

originally the date was 25th may but due to her hubby's flight from Belgium was delayed , so she postponed the majlis tahlil for her late mum to 1st may .I decided to bake this MCB for her, while at her house, learned a word or two like 'yaa' for yes and 'ney' for No.
my fav language has to be French, oui? non? merci, au revoir, bonjour, bon soir, bon nuit, parles vous francais? non... a little bit only....hehe...it's nice to see you again kak tata, after so many, many, many years

She's in SP but her friends came back for the weekend and their houses are not far from mine so she decided to order this BCT from me.And I received a sweet comment from her in my e-mail this morning.thank you Qib for this order and thank you Anis, Mira and Azza who came to collect the BCT on Qibs behalf.
